Samuel Z Dev

I have been teaching English and Spanish for a number of years and I am now on a self-taught journey to become a DevOps Engineer. In this blog I document my insight and reflections on it.

I use Linux. I am fascinated by it and enjoy the continuous journey of understanding it. I gravitate towards Arch and window managers. I self host too and look for ways to use that to improve workflows for myself and other businesses.

I love databases. Thinking about data models is so fun to me and I find it rewarding to apply them to real problems in my personal and professional life. Postgres is a superpower I am really fond of. SQLite files are all over my $HOME and there is something really satisfying about using it to organize my workflows across various projects. Is it the speed, the portability, the supercharged simplicity, the sovereignty?

I enjoy the challenge of learning. I prefer reading documentation over watching videos. I value experimenting, analyzing, and taking notes. I do not use LLMs.

I like pressing mechanical switches. I type on Dvorak. I prefer keeping my hands on the keyboard and using the terminal. I edit with neovim.

I am deeply curious about CS, computer history, Unix, C. Big, old computers and terminals are so cool. I am grateful for free and open source software. I believe privacy and data ownership are important. I am very blessed by those who have chosen to share their knowledge with the world so that people like me can learn from them. I would be honored to be able to do the same.
